Road Safety at Norristhorpe
Here at Norristhorpe we want our children to have the skills they need to become safe and confident pedestrians and cyclists with excellent road safety knowledge. Mrs Sweeney leads on organising a range of events across school to develop road safety awareness. We acknowledge that the roads near our school can be challenging, particularly when it comes to parking safely but we do what we can to encourage children and their families to walk, scoot and cycle to school. We regularly have breakfast events to encourage families to leave cars at home and assemblies remind children of ways to be safe on the roads at different times of the year. We have a bike shelter and scooter pods to enable children to stores bikes and scooters safely. We also have poster competitions, organise safety campaigns and have after school walks with our school mascot, Norris!
To develop all these important skills, we have a number of activities that take place in different year groups.
Reception
Our Reception staff have all been trained by a qualified teacher in how to teach children to ride balance bikes. In the Spring term, children have enjoyed regular sessions to learn how to handle, balance and ride the bikes. It has been fantastic to see the children grow their confidence to be able to ride their bikes and they love their balance bike lessons!

Year 1
Year 1 take part in Beep Beep Day, when they learn all about road safety. This is a national event teaching the children about road and car safety. The children learn all about the importance of car seats and seat belts. They watch videos about the importance of holding hands with an adult when walking by a road and crossing. They also learn about crossing a road safely using Stop, Look, Listen, Think. Year 1 also have further balance bike training sessions.

During ‘Speed Watch’ They will all have the opportunity to understand more about roads, car travel and the law, and will go out onto the roads near school with speed guns to remind those driving near school to keep their speed safe.
