PERSONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH & ECONOMIC EDUCATION
INTENT
Here at Norristhorpe, we have created a Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) curriculum which is accessible to every pupil and will help all to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Our pupils will develop a range of skills and strategies allowing them to live a safe, fulfilling and balanced life.
As a school, we encourage our pupils to foster a love of learning and to have a strong focus on our school’s Core Values; Nurturing, Open-hearted, Resilient, Responsible, Independent, Safe, Together, Honest, Outstanding, Proud and Equal. These are covered in many forms with the pupils and encapsulate our aspirations for all.
Norristhorpe School’s PSHE education contributes to personal development by helping all pupils to build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem, to identify and manage risk, to make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions. It enables them to recognise, accept and shape their identities, to understand and accommodate difference and change and to manage emotions and communicate constructively in a variety of settings.
IMPLEMENTATION
PSHE education is taught as a planned, developmental programme of learning that is timetabled for at least 30 minutes per week in each year group. Through three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World, pupils acquire the knowledge and understanding, alongside skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. We follow the PSHE Association, as it provides a whole-school approach, which develops the qualities and attributes our pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. We acknowledge the personalised learning required to suit our Norristhorpe learners and as such have highlighted key areas in our curriculum that is bespoke for our children. For our RSE lessons, we follow the Medway scheme of work.
PSHE education makes a significant contribution to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development; understanding British Values and what it means to be a British Citizen; their behaviour, personal safety and emotional wellbeing.
Our PSHE curriculum is taught through a mix of themed weeks, discrete lessons and coverage within other areas of the curriculum. We will adapt our timetable to respond to local, national and global events in an age appropriate way.
Impact
We will know how PSHE has made an impact in the children by using pupil voice, baseline assessments conducted before and after learning as well as varied activities presented in books that shows their learning journeys. With evidence made up of photographs, oral and written activities, children will show their understanding of the learning they have been doing. Our pupils will develop an understanding of themselves, empathy and the ability to work with others, which will help them form and maintain good relationships.
